Leaning into the cozy...

Winter is not my favorite.  But this year I am trying to be intentional about looking for the good. A couple weeks ago I asked google to make me a personal curriculum on "Wintering"- I was actually pretty pleased with what it came back with.  Some of the things I am trying to implement are-

  1. Culinary Arts: The Soup & Bread Lab
Assignment: Every two weeks, master one new homemade soup recipe.
Extra Credit: Bake a loaf of focaccia or sourdough to accompany your meal.

Obviously this is an assignment I can fully get behind. This week I made a delicious Chicken Tortilla Soup from The Real Food Dieticians- although admittedly I did not follow the directions per say- I just dumped all the ingredients in the crockpot and hoped for the best, I was not disappointed.  We had leftover sourdough from Sunday, so that accompanied this meal.

  2. Humanities: Deep Reading & Philosophy
Literature: Choose a "winter classic" (e.g., Katherine May’s Wintering or a Gothic novel) and read it slowly, one chapter at a time.
Journaling: Use weekly prompts to reflect on what this "wintering" season is teaching you about slowing down and letting go.

I am currently reading Wintering by Katherine May and not loving it- I decided to give it one more day but if tonight I still feel the same I will set it aside for something else. I have a library stack out right now on Hygge and a book of poems.

  3. Physical Education: Gentle Movement
Mobility: Practice 10 minutes of "legs-up-the-wall" or gentle stretching to reset the nervous system.

My goal if you recall is to exercise 3-4xs a week- mainly that has been yoga, and last week I only hit two days. Today is a new day to try again.

  4. Social Studies: Intentional Connection
Outreach: Reach out to one person a week via text or call just to say "thinking of you".
Community: Host one small, low-pressure gathering, like a cookie decorating night or a soup potluck.

This one is one of my favs! Just this weekend we had a cookbook club at my house and I had 6 of my favorite ladies join me for a night of cozy food and conversation. We all picked a prepared a recipe (or two) from Good Lookin' Cookin', everyone brought their prepared recipe and we all sat around chatting and enjoying good food and company.

One of my favs was the creme brulee Stacey made- it was so good!

I also had tea with a friend on Saturday which brought such refreshment and encouragement to our spirits.

  5. One other thing I added myself is Crafting- my FB feed lately has become a wealth of quilting and sewing reels. I am here for it!

This week I cleaned off the counter in my laundry room (which adjoins my craft room) so I can once again use it for my cutting counter.

I went fabric shopping with my Mom and got fabric to make lil granbaby's quilt. I am beyond excited about this project! This is probably the only peek you will get until after I gift it to my lil mama at her shower this spring.

I also want to make this Block of the Month quilt with Emily. I am thinking about doing a Christmas themed one with my plethora of leftover Jammie fabrics and scraps from through the years.

This week I (finally) finished week 2 of (last year's) Canalboat Crochet-a-long. I love this years pattern but decided I needed to finish this one before I would allow myself to purchase it. Very hard when I got the email last week that kits were back in stock!

Part two- I wove in all the ends during this weeks book club call before I started part 3. I am enjoying the coziness and the process. Crocheting the shell rows are my favorite.

  6. I am enjoying our Church 2026 Bible Reading plan. It's such a delight to study God's Word in community.  We have a facebook group to daily discuss what we reading, learning, noticing, etc.. and this Sunday will be the first of our monthly fellowship dinners after church. I so enjoy this community. This could also be nestled above under #4.

My husband is also part of the group and I can not even begin to express the delight of seeing him digging in his Bible, and also being a part of a Sunday School class.

I hope this winter you are finding ways to thrive and be cozy. Feel free to tell me in the comments something you have done or would like to implement. 💖 Until next time.

Sister Coffee Date!

It felt so good to resume our Sister Coffee Dates on Saturday. There is a new bookshop that opened near us in the fall and we had yet to be able to make it there. I did a quick search on google maps and found what looked like a delightful spot to grab some coffee right across the street. Bonus this little oasis is halfway between her house and mine.

We started at Crepe Time Cafe- we opted on only get lattes not crepes this time around.  Although they did look yummy so maybe next time!  We sat at the counter by the window and chatted about books, life and all the things. A respite and reset we very much needed.

Laura got a cinnamon roll latte and I got a sugar cookie one.
I'm a sucker for the seasonal drink menu

Then we headed across the street to Of Moose & Mind Bookshop. It was a delightful little shop! Mayhap my new favorite bookstore and only roughly 10 minutes from home! Delight!

We took our time, soaking in the atmosphere and browsing the carefully curated shelves. One of the books that caught our eye was a new one by Dick Van Dyke. I was delighted to later find the audio available through my amazon music subscription.

We then wandered down the street to Manlius Supply Co- which was cute and fun but a little out of our price range.

We still had a little time so of course we ventured to the Library. No pictures there but I came home with two books from the book sale shelf and two library books. It was a day of delight for sure.

Can't wait to see where our next adventure takes us.

2026 Goals and a look back at 2025

New year, new opportunities or same ole same ole.

Starting my new planner always fills me with delight and a little trepidation

My theme for this year is Slow Down & Savor. Sometimes I just feel so frantic but as I learned from Ann Voskamp years ago... Haste makes waste. Life is not an emergency. We are not losing time, we stand on the brink of eternity. Probably not a direct quote but lines that have stuck with me.  This year I want to soak it all in.  To find delight in my life and my home. To quietly savor.

Overall 2026 goals- I love this page in my planner
  • Make Baby Quilt
  • Practice ASL
  • start playing piano again?
  • start a commonplace book
  • Go to the library just to browse (normally I put books on hold and just pop in to pick them up)
  • MORE sister & friend coffee/lunch dates
  • re-read more
  • New Testament reading plan with my church
January Goals-
  • Pick pattern for baby quilt, purchase fabric for top.  I ordered a Pooh charm pack the minute I found out Baby was on the way! Now I know she's a GIRL and can get serious.
  • Exercise 3-4x's a week
  • Finish 2025 photobooks
  • clean piano room
  • Finish Age of Innocence; start Middlemarch-read book 1
  • lean into cozy wintering and rest

Looking back at 2025:

I did not do very well with my word of the year- which was consistent. I feel like the only thing I was consistent at was failing to be consistent in anything :P  It was a hard year. We had some trials in the LaForte family. Now adjusting to an empty nest and more uncertainty on the horizon. But there was much good too.

Favorite moments:

Our sisters trip was a definite highlight

As was our family reunion trip to Hershey, PA

Best thing I read: Wow this is a hard question... I keep looking back at my 5 star reads and I am not sure that one stands out above the others. For the sake of choosing one I am going to say The Frozen River, I loved the mystery, I loved the long term, marriage, romance between the main character and her husband.  I love seeing stories about marriages that stand the test of time and all life throws at them.

Best new habit: I am not sure this qualifies as a habit but one of my favorite new regular things from 2025 was starting Cousin Book Club with my sister and cousin.

Song on repeat: I don't typically pick a song to listen too- I usually just have KLOVE on or my pandora shuffling through all my stations because I like variety.  And my pandora is very eclectic- it will play anything from Veggie Tales to showtunes to Metallica to anything and everything in between. That said- one night I was in a mood, life was stressful and I was grumpy. I texted my husband and then trying to shake it off got up to clean the kitchen and put on pandora- this is the song that played! God was definitely speaking to me through that one- and I did turn it up and listen to it a few times on repeat. Hallelujah Anyway by Rend Collective.

Best meal or recipe: Pretzel Bites were by far my favorite recipe of the year!

Milestone Celebration: Hannah graduated high school

We celebrated 27 years of marriage! Something I will never take for granted.

We learned we have our first grandbaby on the way!

2025 reading wrap up!

Reading Intentions for 2025 end of the year check in

  • I set my goodreads goal at 100 again- I came in at 97 books this year and I don't feel sad about it. I feel pretty happy that I read TWO Jane Austen novels this year.
  • The 2025 52 bookclub - I want to try and do this 50% or more Christian books- success! Completed the challenge on December 30th and 30 out of 52 were Christian books
  • Read more non fiction (only 9 this year/8%)- only 5 this year- so I guess I still need to work on that one
  • Read more faith based books (45% in 2024)  55.8 % this year! 29 in total, there were a few more I didn't characterize as "Christian" in that the story didn't really have any faith material but were definitely clean- like Courtney Walsh books.
  • Slow down, re-read when I feel like it, really pay attention to what I am reading- still a work in progress... sometimes I feel so frantic that there's simply too many books to read.
Highlight was definitely our Sisters Bookish Road trip to Massachusetts.

2025 Stats-

I had 15- 5 star reads this year!

  • Appalachian Song by Michelle Shocklee
  • Becoming Elisabeth Elliot by Ellen Vaughn
  • The Briar Club by Kate Quinn
  • When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin
  • The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
  • Secrets of the Revolution by Megan Soja
  • Lowcountry Lost  by T I Lowe
  • Lulu's Cafe by T I Lowe
  • Emma by Jane Austen
  • My Friends by Fedrick Backman
  • Lost Girl by Kate Angelo
  • The Correspondent  by Virginia Evans
  • Through each Tomorrow by Gabrielle Meyer
  • Up from Dust by Heather Kaufman
  • Scars of the Revolution by Megan Soja *This book comes out TODAY! I highly recommend all three books in this series!
Goals for 2026-
  • My overall theme for 2026 is Slow down and Savor- I am trying to bring that into my reading life as well.
  • I am doing the 52 bookclub challenge again and again trying to do more Christian books than not, and also read from my own shelves (or towering stacks as the case maybe)
  • I am doing this challenge from 2020 with my sister- we have become pretty big fans of The Literary Life podcast in the past few weeks. We are really excited about their 2026 podcast lineup too.

  • I set my goodreads goal at 72 (adding 52 bookclub and 20 for LLP but I may read more or less, I have some hefty books on my 2026 TBR, I guess we'll see where the year brings me)
  • Middlemarch- never finished in on my previous attempt and beginning again as a community read with MMD Bookclub, I intend to read it slow, soak it in and participate in the conversation.
  • I got this book for Christmas from Ryan and Nicole and am super excited about it. 1000 Books to Read Before You Die.  We had a great time looking at it on New Years at mom and dad's. I have so far read 32 books off the list (in my lifetime) and am aiming for at least 20 more this year.  I first heard about it a few years back on the WSIRN podcast and its been on my wish list ever since.

Currently: I am reading...

The Reading List (re-read, one of my favorites).
Little Women (also a re-read)
The Age of Innocence (with Laura)
Not a Tame Lion (in my devo time)

I am looking forward to many more literary adventures in 2026.  What is one of your favorite books or bookish adventures from 2025? What's om your list for 2026?

December Reading

86 A Quilter's Holiday (Elm Creek Quilts #15) by Jennifer Chiaverini    12/1    (print/library)

A reread from my past. Like visiting old friends. This one takes place largely on the day after Thanksgiving when the Elm Creek Quilters get together to work on holiday projects and have a potluck lunch. So it felt very fitting for a post Thanksgiving read.

I initially read this back in like 2010- was that really 15 years ago?! Gasp. This book reminded me of my love for this series and for quilting. Hoping to get back to quilting in 2026.  And also catch back up with the Elm Creek Quilters in this series both by rereading and reading some of the newer books.

87 Emma M Lion Vol 3 by Beth Bowser    12/4    (audio/hoopla)

52 Bookclub 32. Includes A Diary Entry

I'm really enjoying this series. I did enjoy listening to the audio on this one but I don't think it will be my preferred format.

“I make a go of it, when I can. It’s not my disposition to…what I mean to say is, I learned a long time ago that my happiness has to be separate from the things beyond my control.

88 From the Start by Melissa Tagg 12/4    (kindle/kindle unlimited)

52 Bookclub 29. Shares A Universe With Prompt 28

Continuing on my journey through Melissa Tagg's book specifically ones set in Maple Valley.  This one took a few tries to get through- mainly because I kept getting distracted to new shiny books. :P But this was a lovely little story once I got into it.

“But . . . if it closes, what will you do?”
“I’ll do whatever comes next.”
“You don’t have a plan?”
“Tell me, Katie, when has having a plan ever translated into things going exactly the way you expected?” He leaned forward then, fatherly gaze somehow gentle and firm at the same time. “I’m not saying we should go through life all half-cocked and clueless. But a little flexibility, a little wait-and-see—I’m coming to see that’s healthy.”

“Pastor Nick’s been a mentor of sorts, and he told me a while back that I didn’t have to have a big plan for my life. I just needed to do the next right thing.

89 The Holiday Swap by Maggie Knox    12/9    (print/own)

52 Bookclub 24. Title Is A Spoiler

I purchased this one on one of our B&N trips last year or maybe even the one before. It's been on my shelf for a while. So I threw it in for this months Cousin Book Club. It did take me a little bit to get into but once I did I found it a delightful holiday read.

Time heals all things. If time fails, try cake.

90 Christmas at Spruce Hill Farm by Kathryn Springer    12/13    (kindle/kindle unlimited)

This was our church book club pick this month and I loved every second of reading this. All these characters were so delightful and I genuinely loved being a part of their journey. I found myself a little sad when I turned the last page wishing to spend more time with them.

“But there are still things to celebrate,” Esther said softly. “Love. Hope. God’s provision. Gifts in the everyday moments. The best stories remind us of that.”

Caleb shrugged. “I’m not much of a reader. Why don’t you just give me the abridged version, and we’ll go from there?” Not a reader? Lucy tried not to hold that against him. “All right.”

“Jesus was called Emmanuel, which means God with us. His very name means we don’t have to be afraid. If you ever doubt that, if you ever doubt God’s goodness, His love for you, I want you to read this story again. It’s not just for Christmas... It’s for all of us every single day.”

But the gathering room wasn’t nearly as appealing as a cup of French press and a toasty fire blazing in the living room.

91 My Merry Mistake by Courtney Walsh    12/19    (kindle/kindle unlimited)

52 Bookclub 37. Genre Chosen For You By Someone Else

Such a fun Christmas-y read. LOVED  it! The third book in the Holidays with Hart series- the third sister and oldest of the Hart sisters finally gets her story.

I have to say I have yet to be disappointed by a Courtney Walsh book.

“Don’t give me that look,” he says. “I know you don’t need a man to open your door, but my momma brought me up to be a gentleman.” He doesn’t budge. “And I believe a gentleman can take care of a woman at the same time that that woman takes care of everything else.”

I nod. “I do. One day I’ll get back home. I just . . . like to seize the day and all that crap.” She laughs. “‘Seize the day and all that crap.’ You should put that on a T-shirt.”

I half-laugh and shake my head. “I don’t understand why he’s so invested in my life.” Her expression shifts. “Because he’s in love with you, sweetheart.”

Every morning, I drink my coffee under the soft glow of the Christmas tree and read. For fun. It’s a quiet hobby, but it suits me, and I’m starting to realize that forcing myself to be productive twenty-four hours a day might not be the best way to “live like it matters.”

92 Christmas in the Castle Library by Ann Swindel    12/19    (audio/hoopla)

This was such a delightful story. I loved every second.  Ellie goes to Lethersby to research for her dissertation over the Christmas break, trying to unravel a 100 year old mystery. She meets Mark in the library and they begin working together. Romance and friendship bloom.  Ellie also has a very relatable and authentic faith journey. All the Hallmark-y, royal romance, Christmas vibes.

93 Kindred Dragons by Sarah Mensinga    12/19    (print/library)

If you recall this was on of the books I came across on our Sisters Berkshire Book Trip. It is billed as a cross between Anne of Green Gables and How to Train Your Dragon. It is middle grade, graphic novel and a fun, light read. The main character Alice certainly gave off Anne Shirley vibes.

94 The Unraveling of Emlyn DuLaine by Lindsay A. Franklin    12/24    (audio/hoopla)

52 Bookclub 27. Features A Magician

I am not sure how I stumbled across this gem but I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a clean YA fantasy. Emlyn stopped writing stories when she watched her sister unravel and vanish before her very eyes. Ten years later odd things begin happening and she is pulled through a portal to land of her childhood stories. Maybe this is her chance to find out what really happened to her sister.

I am very excited to discover it is the first in a series and can't wait for book 2 in February.

Stories, Miss Emmy, are what bind us. Stories hold us together and help us think through problems, work through emotions. They take us on adventures, allow us to escape, but even more than that, they help us see the universe more clearly. Through stories, fantastical though they be, we see reality in greater detail.

 95 Emma M Lion Vol 4 by Beth Bowser    12/25    (kindle/kindle unlimited)

52 Bookclub 25. Breaks The Fourth Wall

I enjoyed this next installment of Emma M Lion. She witty and snarky and a delight to read. I did miss hearing her voice a little so I may do the next one on audio again. Pierce is still my favorite side character.

Is it immoral to marry a man solely to gain a library? And if that man happens to be tremendously good looking, is it more or less of a sin?

It was then I thought that life—my life, in particular—wasn’t wholly worth giving up on yet.

96 To Love a Beast by Karen Witemeyer    12/29    (kindle/kindle unlimited)

52 Bookclub 20. A Fairy Tale Retelling

A fairy tale retelling of Beauty and the Beast and a complete delight. Set in Texas in the 1800s, our beauty, works with her father as a book binder. When her father injuries his hand she must travel alone to the manor of a customer who has commissioned them to rebind his personal library. This was a quick read and I devoured most of it Monday on my day off. And is that cover not a delight itself!

"Hope sees possibilities where fear sees only barriers. Hope trusts that God will rescue and restore, and it enables us to endure the interim. Despite what people say, hope cannot be stolen or destroyed. It will only be lost if you surrender it of your own free will. So hold tight, Callie. Never let it go."

Lightfoot shook his head, unimpressed by Everett's quip. "It's not a man's appearance that forms his identity, it's his character. You are more than your face, Griff. You always have been."

He must have recognized the yearning in her voice when she mentioned that fact, for he made the most astounding offer. To read it aloud to her. As long as his reading wouldn't deter her from her work.  *ah, delight!*

97 Me Moth by Amber McBride    12/30    (audio/library)

52 Bookclub 17. Told In Verse

I listened to this to fulfill the prompt of a novel told in verse.  I heard about it on a podcast or something as someone saying it was one of their best books of summer. I wasn't really a fan. It is YA which is not a deal breaker but this one just didn't hit for me. The story of two troubled teens and a pretty good representation of why I have started to lean more into Christian fiction. It talked a lot about ancestors and hoodoo, and left me feelings of sadness and hopelessness.

Thankfully it was pretty short, and my last book for the 2025 52 Bookclub challenge.

Total: 12   2025: 97

Kindle/Ebook: 5   Print: 3     Audio: 4

Library: 6    Owned: 1    Kindle Unlimited: 5

Favorite: I really enjoyed all the Christmas books this month- and To Love a Beast also!

Challenges: I was successful in completing the 52 Bookclub Challenge, 1 day early! I'm looking forward to the 2026 challenge.  The others I started were abandoned.

My 2025 reflections and goals for 2026 will be coming in the next few days.
