It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

We got our tree on Saturday! And decorated it on Sunday while Mikayla was over after Church.

The boys cozied up in the living room enjoying the warmth from the first fire of the season.

They were also super helpful as always as I started making this year's Christmas jammies...

This morning I enjoyed quiet time by the lit Christmas tree.

I am looking forward to beginning my Christmas journal on Wednesday.

My library craft Holiday Gnomes. 😊

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

He doesn't look it but Bruno was super thrilled to resume our creek runs.  He was in fact annoyed with me for trying to take a selfie instead of just running :P
It felt so good to be out and running although also really hard- hopefully it will get better from here.

I did lots of cooking/baking this weekend and it made me happy! Looking forward to cooking on Wednesday night and Thursday morning =)
Sourdough bread

Which made really good avocado toast Sunday morning

Stuffing and Apple Pie for our church Thanksgiving Dinner.  I made a sourdough pie crust and it was totally amazing!

Stuffed Pepper Soup and Sourdough Pumpkin Muffins on Friday evening.

I was surprised to find out my Dad was preaching yesterday when I got to church and happy to be able to sit with Mikayla and my sister and nephew for the service.

Epic arm wrestling battle after dinner

Chance needed some snuggles while I was reading.

I read this book- mostly on Sunday afternoon.  I happened upon it on christian book while looking up a potential book club selection.  The cover grabbed me and I was please to find it available on Hoopla immediately.
It was just so good.  The story of a knitting group who gets booted out their church while the prayer chapel is being renovated.  They wind up meeting in the mall in a seating area in front of Macy's.  It is a heartwarming tale which made me both laugh and cry. A whole host of diverse and interesting characters.  Themes of friendship, forgiveness, prayer and knitting woven throughout.

I was so moved by the book I had to begin knitting a prayer shawl this morning for some random yarn I had in my basement.

I am very much a novice knitter and just casting on took me three tries!  But I tucked it into my bag nonetheless... hopefully I will be able to show more progress in a day or two :P This one may end up being just practice- as I am pretty rusty with my knitting skills... hoping maybe to make it to the craft store after payday ;)

Delight in the law of the LORD

I could have lingered at my kitchen table all day today.  I love this spot, the quiet peaceful morning time.  The glow of a candle or two, God's word open before me.

This weekend I went to a prayer breakfast with a friend at her church.  It filled my heart.  The music the message, the once again realizing we are one.  Unity has become a resounding theme at this season in my life.  This morning I picked up Until Unity to read through again...the opening words piercing my heart yet again- How much have I praised Jesus today?

My notes scribbled in the from of my little purse Bible on saturday- because that was the only paper I had.  Reminding me to see people through Jesus' eyes.  Reminding me I have a purpose. I am hear for a reason.

October Books!

1- Miss Cecily's Recipes for Exceptional Ladies by Vicky Zimmerman 10/1     (kindle)

I stumbled across this book on a blog that I am not even sure how I came to...but ended up reading this her September book club selection- even though September was nearly over and indeed October before I finished it.  Also I clearly need another book club commitment in my life! 😅😂

Anyway- this one was just the ticket to pull me out of my reading slump. Kate begins volunteering at an old folks home (because the animal shelter had a waiting list and the Home was near by).  She is a book loving foodie- nursing a broken heart, while still clinging to hope, in a dead end job that she hates but had held for 20 years. What can I say, her character spoke to my heart.  She ends up striking up an unlikely friendship with a very grumpy and sometimes downright mean Mrs. Finn.

Life is as long as it’s short.” “What does that even mean?” “It means find what nourishes your soul, discover what you’re capable of—live life well.”

Sometimes with Nick, it feels like Kate’s living on crumbs.

There’s a time to be sad and a time to be thankful—but right now it’s time to eat.

2- From a Distance (#1 Timber Ridge) by Tamera Alexander 10/6     (eBook)

A Christian historical romance set in the Colorado frontier just a short while after the Civil War.  Elizabeth is photographer from Washington DC. She's come west in hopes of winning a position as journalist with her photos of the mountainous frontier. Daniel a transplanted southerner after the war becomes her guide on her trek. He is dealing with his own struggles from during and after the war.  My favorite character was definitely Josiah. A former slave Elizabeth employs as her assistant. He was funny and kind, I enjoyed his banter with Elizabeth and his loyalty.
It wasn’t that he didn’t like people. He did. He just liked most of them better from a distance.

There can’t be different versions. Truth is constant. A person’s perspective might be skewed, but that doesn’t change what the truth is.

"I gets up each day and I face what God gives me to handle, ma’am. Sometimes I fear it. Won’t say that I don’t. But knowin’ He’s already sifted through it and that Jesus knows what’s comin’ before it gets to me . . . well, I reckon that ought to be enough.” Such wisdom and trust from a man who had been so misused in his life. (Josiah)

What she hadn’t known then was that God loved her enough to intervene in her dream—to shatter it, to shatter her—only so He could put her back together and give her an even bigger, better dream. His dream for her life.

3- Gone South by Meg Moseley 10/8    (print)

Another feel good comfort read.  I really loved all the characters. Also I just loved the cover. I know, I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover...

Tish McComb decides on a whim to purchase a home that once belonged to her ancestors in Alabama.  Moving into the south from Michigan she discovers little southern towns aren't always welcoming to Yankee strangers...and perhaps there was more to her ancestors stories than she know...  couple that with taking in a disowned 20 year old black sheep named Mel just back in town herself.  Mel had a bit of a spoiled brat/teenage vibe going but at the same time I couldn't help but find myself rooting for her.

4- Until Unity by Francis Chan    10/14     (print)

This book. You need to read it. It's eye opening and convicting.  Pushing you to examine your own heart instead of pointing fingers at those around you.

There is nothing you have to do today that is more important than worshipping Him.

Our lack of praise may actually be the biggest cause of our divisions. Once we stop worshipping, all hope for unity is lost. This is what unites us: we can’t stop talking about the treasure we have in Jesus. It’s hard to start an argument with someone who is on her knees shouting praises to Jesus, especially when you’re busy blessing the Lord as well. Many of our problems could be reconciled if we discussed our concerns on our knees before a Holy God. We can’t allow the Enemy or our enemies to interrupt our praise. Worship is our path to unity.

Being a Christian means that Christ has entered you, filled you with His love, and is pouring His life through you to the people around you.

5- Sarai by Jill Eileen Smith     10/14     (eBook)

I read this book because I was reading about Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar in my devotional time.

Hagar actually intrigued me so I was looking for something to go a little deeper.  It was an interesting look into what the life of Sarai might have been like.

6- Finding Hagar by Michael F. Kuhn    10/18    (eBook)

Still wanting more of Hagar I came across this book on Hoopla. Not a novel but as snippets of fiction interspersed at the beginning of each chapter. Lots of information and insight into the life of this Bible character and the traditions and customs of the time.

One theory I found interesting was that perhaps Hagar reunited with Abraham after Sarah's death.  There is record that he married again, and also Ishmael was present with Isaac when he buried Abraham. Lending to the thought that Abraham and Ishmael were reconciled. This author postulates that after Sarah's death, Isaac sought out Ishmael and Hagar to comfort his father.
"Redeemed by grace, Hagar returns with her dignity restored, head held high, her identity now defined in relation to the God who sees her."
7- Luck, Love and Lemon Pie by Amy E Reichert    10/24     (Kindle)

I picked this up because I loved the other two books I have read by this author.  I was looking for a light fun read. This was not (for me).  It was about a 20 year marriage, the couple getting stuck in routine had grown apart.  MJ with good intentions wants to play poker with her husband as a way to spend time together and reconnect anew.  She then gets caught up in the excitement of the game and it takes more and more of her time. She begins to neglect her family and marriage. I found this book frustrating and MJ annoyed me more than I can say.  I just wanted to shake her and tell her to wake up.  This book was not a good fit for me. While different circumstances some things triggered bad memories and awoke insecurities in my own heart. But I also had to see it through to find out if it turned out ok!

8- Parable of the Sower by Octavia E Butler    10/27    (eBook)

This is MMD book Club pick for October.  Another book I didn't particularly enjoy but felt compelled to finish.  It is a dystopian novel originally published in 1996. (Hard to believe this was 25 years ago!)  The hardest thing was the brutality in the way people treated on another and yet not so hard to believe sometimes with the was society is going.  Which is more than a little scary.  It did have hopeful notes- I began to care deeply for the characters and wanted to see where the story took them. The main character is Lauren, an 18 year old girl. She is the daughter of a pastor but has rejected Christianity in favor of a religion she has "discovered" Earthseed.
My God doesn’t love me or hate me or watch over me or know me at all, and I feel no love for or loyalty to my God. My God just is. (This statement makes me incredibly sad.)

All that you touch, You Change. All that you Change, Changes you. The only lasting truth Is Change. God Is Change. (Seemingly Lauren's founding thought on God and Earthseed).

Embrace diversity. Unite— Or be divided, robbed, ruled, killed By those who see you as prey. Embrace diversity Or be destroyed.
9- When Silence Sings by Sarah Loudin Thomas  10/31      (print)

My book club pick for this month. I kinda picked it on a whim, feeling overwhelmed by the numerous possibilities. I found it a little slow getting into but I read the final 1/2 to 1/3 in a single afternoon/evening.  It takes place in the 30s in the hills of West Virginia.  Coleman a wanna be preacher finds himself called to preach to the enemies of his family.  I think it shows how God loves all his people, even if we think they are bad or downright evil- God still loves them and wants to have a relationship with them.  Flawed as people maybe there is good to be found.

This month: 9

Total read in 2021:  76

Kindle/Ebook: 6    Print: 3    Audio: 0

Library: 8   Owned: 1

Favorite this month: Until Unity- this one is sticking with me and will definately be a re-read.

Be Still. . .

I am so enjoying the quiet peace and assurance that comes with this study.

Also from Gratitude Documented. Giving it all to God today.

A few years back my Dad referenced this book in one of his messages.
Going through a particularly hard time myself at the time I checked it out on hoopla and devoured it. It has come to mind several times recently and especially this week as I have been studying Psalm 23 again.
"The Lord's Prayer and the Twenty-third Psalm together became the cocktail of life that healed my mind. Mixed and well-shaken, repeated back to back, over and over again, prayed aloud, prayed silently, desperately, joyfully sometimes with such ragged faith it could hardly be called faith, these two ancient devotional instruments became the medicine of my soul's restoration."

Today I am thankful...
  • Hannah feeling better
  • the privilege and ability to vote
  • picking up library books
  • reconnecting

day 2...

This morning the dog {Chance} woke me up 20 minutes before my alarm to go outside.  And generally I hit snooze for 10, 15 sometimes 20 minutes after that.  Annoyed and sleepy I trudged downstairs to let him outside. I then curled up on the couch in the darkness hoping to catch a few more zzz's. But the verse for yesterday's Gratitude Documented kept rolling around in my mind.  So I ended up getting up and spending extra time in my little sanctuary.

After much debate I decided to do my Gratitude Documented right in my bullet journal...maybe adding some in my Bible too.  We'll see.  I missed out on getting the kit, it was already gone by the time I thought of it.  Yesterday though I purchased the digital printable kit.  It is 8 pages, has the prompts as well as some the flowers and leaves etc... pictured below.  I'm really excited about the flowers. I printed some on clear sticker paper and some on matte photo paper.  I'm very please with the outcome.  I'm also using random scrapbook paper I have on hand from over the years, washi tape and probably the stamps from a previous year.

I have been struggling with the past and fear for the future so having this verse be part of the prompt from yesterday felt like a hug and reassurance from God.

“Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland."
Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV

I'm thankful I do not have to have it all figured out.  It's ok if life feels messy and hard right now. God's still got me. God is in control and He is at work.

Day 2 of Slowing Down ~
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Psalm 23:3 NKJV

I am thankful-
  • was able to get Hannah a new sample pair of contacts
  • baked potato soup and muffins
  • Day 1- Gratitude Documented- Is 43:18-19

Hello November~

It's November! Ushering my favorite season/holiday- Thanksgiving!

This morning I began the Slowing Down study from Women Living Well.

The Lord is my shepherd;
I have what I need.
He lets me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside quiet waters.
Psalm 23:1-2 CSB

A very good reminder I needed today. God supplies all my needs. Envisioning resting in the green pastures beside the still waters.

The boys were super helpful in completing my book club read this weekend.

Last Monday I went to another library craft night with a friend. We had a lovely time and I love how mine turned out.
